Why We Do the Things We Do
When I see a pair of shoes hanging from cables above, I can’t help but wonder why anyone would do that. It seems so stupid and childish to me. Do they do it just to see if they can? Is it just because they want to? Probably both.
And how many times in my life have I done the same with more important and life altering decisions. I’ve done things, to my own shame, for the simple reason that I can… or that I want to. How foolish! Then I wonder why everything has gone wrong, why I’ve ended up in trouble or in pain. The answer is simple – because I’ve made my own plans, done my own thing, in my own ways.
In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps.
(Proverbs 16:9 NIV)
